Apples in Winter

community education project

Our mission is to empower American communities to reconnect with the origins of their food and fiber by fostering hands-on education, sustainable farming practices, and local agriculture systems.

Through innovative hands-on programs for students and adults, we aim to reduce waste, inspire self-reliance, and build resilient communities rooted in sustainability and collaboration.

Where is our food really from?

In today’s fast-paced world, we are often disconnected from the origins of our food and clothing. We rarely consider the impact of their production on the environment, local economies, and communities.

As we rely more on mass production and global supply chains, the vital connections between our daily choices and the resources required to make them seem increasingly distant. It’s crucial to reconnect with these sources and understand the real costs behind what we consume and wear.

Why is this vital to understand?

Supporting Local Farms and Fibersheds: A Path to a Healthier Planet

In today’s fast-paced, globalized world, the journey from farm to table—or pasture to product—has become increasingly long and complex. Unfortunately, this can come at a great cost to the environment and to our connection with what sustains us. Supporting local farms and fibersheds offers a powerful solution, fostering sustainability, reducing waste, and reconnecting communities with their roots.

A Smaller Footprint for a Greener Planet

When we buy locally produced food and fiber, we eliminate many of the environmental impacts associated with transporting goods across long distances. The transportation, processing, and packaging needed to support global supply chains consume significant fossil fuels and contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing local, we:

  • Lower Emissions: Shorter transport distances mean fewer carbon emissions.

  • Reduce Waste: Locally grown foods often require less packaging and processing, minimizing landfill contributions.

  • Support Biodiversity: Small, diverse farms often employ sustainable methods that protect the ecosystem instead of exploiting it.

Local fibersheds (regional networks of fiber producers and artisans) also play a vital role by promoting sustainable practices like rotational grazing and regenerative agriculture, which can improve soil health, sequester carbon, and enhance ecosystem resilience.

Reconnecting with the Sources

Understanding where our food and fiber come from is not just an environmental necessity—it’s an opportunity to reconnect with the people, processes, and ecosystems that sustain us.

  • Transparency: When you know your farmer or fiber producer, you can trust the quality of what you’re buying and gain insights into how it was made.

  • Education: Learning about the journey of food from soil to table—or wool from sheep to garment—creates greater appreciation for the resources and care involved.

  • Healthier Communities: Local agriculture encourages healthier eating habits and stimulates regional economies, keeping money within the community and fostering resilience.

A Call to Action

Supporting local farms and fibersheds isn’t just about making environmentally friendly choices—it’s about creating a cultural shift. By valuing local food systems and fibers, we reduce waste, mitigate climate change, and pave the way for a future where communities are connected, sustainable, and self-reliant.

Together, we can redefine what it means to be stewards of the planet, of our communities, and of our bodies—starting right in our own backyards.

In our engaging and hands-on presentation, students will meet real sheep and learn how they play an important role in both our food and clothing systems. We’ll explore how wool is turned into the fabrics we wear and how local farming can help the planet. Through interactive activities, listeners will discover the journey of food and fiber from farm to table—and leave with a deeper appreciation for where everyday essentials come from!
